What influenced your decision to pursue a Master of Public Health at UConn?: To engage my learning through critical thinking and applying systems thinking to the real world in every healthcare setting. My grandfather carries an intersection of health conditions that have been a result of innnate and environmental exposures, and to learn/explore more about the foundational resources in healthcare (community centers, health clinics, health educational programs, and at-home remedies) would benefit my adaptation as a prospective healthcare provider to better understand the community to which I serve. Being the first in my family to pursue public health in higher education can also serve as a primitive example for the people I work with, where being first generation doesn’t need to limit the pathway to pursing a field that genuinely interests you.
Background: Mixed Italian & Latina female (Puerto Rican and Dominican), LGBTQ+, Prospective Emergency Medical Technician, Clothes making, Aspiring DJ
Life Outside Work and School: Swimming, dancing, singing (in the shower), roller skating, reading, my grandfather.
Your immediate (next 1-5 years) career goals: Pursue medical school to dive deep into the field of family medicine and maternal health. I’d like to also create a non-profit organization that incorporates the concepts of healthy living, personal interests, and mental health to stimulate a progressive community for people across all ages within inner cities.
Anything Else: “Doing what I love, and loving what I do” is the motto for my future career path. Since getting my bachelors degree, I don’t expect my graduate school journey to get easier but to be more constructive towards my professional development.
