Discipline and date of your BA or BS degree: Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN); 2022
What influenced your decision to pursue a Master of Public Health at UConn?: I work as a nurse in the Emergency Department at UConn Health. There is no better window to look into the reality of the public health situation in our country than working in the emergency department. Over the past 3 years, I have seen who walks through our doors and what needs to be done to improve public health in our communities. Not only do many people use the emergency department inappropriately, but I also frequently see the ER used as a primary care provider for those who do not have one.
Background: Since graduating with my BSN from UConn, I have worked in UConn Health’s Emergency Department. I have been there for 3 years as a registered nurse. I also have experience working in triage at the main entrance of the emergency department.
Life Outside Work and School: My main hobbies outside of work and school are cooking and gardening, with a focus on tropical plants that normally cannot be grown in Connecticut. My goal is to be totally food independent at all times of the year (be able to grow all that I need without relying on grocery stores).
Your immediate (next 1-5 years) career goals: I would like to finish my Master’s in Public Health and immediately work for the Department of Public Health (DPH). I believe that with my experience working in the Emergency Department, I can bring a great perspective to the flaws in our public health system and how it can be improved.
Anything Else: I was informed that there may be options for internships with DPH. I would be interested in an internship with the Department of Public Health when the opportunity arises.
